Find a Trainer/Consultant/Supervisor

This list of trainers is meant to help therapists more easily contact expert FAP consultants/trainers who are able to train FAP accurately, both didactically and experientially. These certified FAP trainers have: 1) extensive experience in learning, practicing and teaching the core competencies of FAP; 2) taught or co-taught FAP workshops and groups with excellent ratings; 3) studied behaviorism intensively and passed an oral exam on contextual behavioral principles and their relationship to FAP interventions and 4) contributed to the FAP literature in terms of theory, research, and/or clinical process.

Because FAP is not yet established as an empirically supported treatment, however, the achievement of “certification” of FAP trainers at this point is an act of trust and faith by FAP co-developers Robert Kohlenberg and Mavis Tsai that trainers will represent FAP the way they intend it to be represented and should not be interpreted as representing an empirically supported or scientifically validated way to conduct FAP. That said, research on FAP to date is supportive.  Efforts are underway to define and reliably measure FAP’s mechanism and FAP competency and to empirically demonstrate that competent FAP and instantiation of FAP’s mechanism matters to important clinical and public health outcomes.

Trainers pay no fees to be listed. There are other FAP trainers who may be equally qualified who are not listed (e.g., they are still completing the certification requirements, they are rarely available, they are primarily researchers or academics, etc.). If others in your area are apparently available to train in FAP, they may be equally qualified.

Renee Hoekstra, Psy.D., Boston (MA), USA

Affiliation: Private Practice

Occupation/ Position Title: Psychologist

City: Boston

Country: USA

State: MA

Highest Degree Held: Psy.D.

FAP background, training and experience: I found the 1991 version of the FAP book in graduate school when we had to take a clinical competency exam and declare our “theoretical orientation.” From that moment I decided I was a behaviorist and copied the entire book at the library to use for my exam (the book was out of print and unavailable at the time). I wrote a paper on the application of FAP to group therapy and later co-authored a book chapter on the topic with Mavis. I have received consultation with Mavis since I started a private practice in Boston in 2009 focusing on DBT and FAP groups. Currently I offer adolescent and adult group therapy with a FAP enhanced focus. I obtained a Harvard DBT post-doctorate (which is what brought me to Boston). I also completed a Master’s Degree in Seattle where I obtained intensive DBT training.

Specialties: Structuring and leading groups, creative use of DBT material, FAP enhanced group interventions.

Philosophy of practice: I believe that groups can maximize the power of what people can offer each other. Thoughtful leadership coupled with the power of social influence can have highly rewarding results. FAP seems like a very natural and specific way to help people conceptualize about their own needs and the needs of others- and to experiment with in-group changes. Growing a group to be cohesive and work together is one of the most rewarding things I do.

Other Pertinent Information: I wrote a paper for my clients to read on the application of behaviorism and FAP for group. They loved it and found it very helpful! I have lots of ideas on how to screen, structure, and lead groups. I’m also collaborating with Luc Vandenburghe in Brazil on writing and presenting FAP application to groups, and we hope to present in Montreal together at the 2018 ACBS conference.

Occupation/Position Title: Clinical Psychotherapist, Teacher, Supervisor, Trainer

City: Três Fronteiras (SP)

Country: Brazil

Highest Degree Held: Doctorate

FAP background, training and experience: My earliest memory of FAP is from 2007 in some specialization classes in Clinical Behavior Analysis at the Paradigma: Center for Behavior Analysis in the city of São Paulo. In 2008, when preparing my research project on shaping client behavior in Child Behavior-Analytic Therapy sessions, I contacted Bob Kohlenberg to request methodological suggestions and the way I was received, the words used by Bob and all the interaction there, they called my attention to something different that I was not yet able to operationalize. After the master’s degree, I accepted a two-year job as a teacher of behavioral therapy and behavior analysis, an opportunity in which I intensified my studies on FAP, including guiding some undergraduation thesis on this topic. During this period, I prepared my doctoral project and, in 2018, defended my thesis “Efficacy of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy for Oppositional Challenging Disorder: Single-Case Experiment”, at the Universidade de São Paulo, supervised by the Associate Professor Sonia Meyer and with presence of Jaíde Regra, Jocelaine Silveira, Johathan Kanter and Mavis Tsai on the defense bench. Since 2012 I have been teaching several FAP workshops in Brazil, such as at the ABPMC meeting in Bauru and at many universities (eg. USP, UFMS, UFPR, UNIFUNEC etc.), promoting online experiential training in the Portuguese language, attending numerous clients with FAP in the public mental health service and in private practice, supervised countless therapists and led meetings of the Global Project Live with Awareness, Courage and Love.

Philosophy of practice: I want to fulfill myself every day interacting extraordinarily with every human being that crosses my path and are open to. To act with awareness, courage and love to establish an intense and healing social bond with my clients, that nourishes the best of them and fills my heart with the satisfaction of giving back to the world all the restoration that has been offered to me. I see my career as a balance between professional practice and vocational fulfillment, in which my interventions are naturally reinforced by the positive change in my client’s life.

State (if in U.S.): Washington

Highest Degree Held: PhD

FAP background, training and experience: My immersion in FAP began in 2002 when I joined the FAP lab as a doctoral student and received clinical training from Mavis Tsai.  My expertise deepened as I spent the next two years participating in the UW’s FAP practicum which I went on to co-lead with Mavis Tsai for the following 5 years.  I have led numerous FAP training and experiential workshops, 10-week FAP experiential groups for therapists in training, and supervised doctoral, post-doc, and masters-level students learning FAP.

Specialties: Anxiety & Mood Disorders, Grief and Loss, and Healing from Trauma.  I also offer EFT and Gottman method for  Couples, and specialize in working with Sexual Minority populations.

Licensures/Certifications: Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Certified FAP trainer

Philosophy of practice:  Underlying all of my work is the idea that none of us are broken, and none of us need to be fixed.  That being said, some of our behaviors are more effective than others, and that is the primary measuring stick I use in therapy: how well are these behaviors working in service of your passions, values, and goals?  Because we are all relational beings, and because life fulfillment depends so much upon the strength of our relationships, I pay special attention to the health and functioning of your relationships outside of therapy, and emphasize the dynamics that show up in our relationship as a means to practice new, more effective ways of being connected and staying emotionally present.  In order to create a more genuine relationship with each client I work with, I bring my vulnerability, emotional courage, and love, to each session and ask my clients to do the same.

Matthew D. Skinta, Ph.D., ABPP, Chicago, USA

PortraitAffiliation:  Roosevelt University

Occupation/Position Title:  Clinical Health Psychologist; Assistant Professor

City: Chicago

Country: USA

State (if in U.S.):  IL

Highest Degree Held:  Ph.D.

FAP background, training and experience: I was first introduced to FAP in graduate school through a recommendation to read the 1991 book, which quickly became an indispensable reference as I grew as a clinician. Eventually I was able to expand this with trainings by Mavis Tsai, Benji Schoendorff, and FAP Intensive workshops at the University of Washington. I incorporate FAP heavily into my clinical work, supervision and consultation, training, and research.

Specialties:  Depression, Sexual Compulsivity, “Normative Male Alexithymia”, HIV and Chronic Disease/Pain (Board-Certified in Clinical Health Psychology), and working with minoritized sexual and gender identities.

Philosophy of practice: The sort of therapy that brings about healing and wellness requires the creation of a sacred, loving space. I don’t believe anyone is broken or incapable of growing in their capacity to be intimate, vulnerable, and fulfilled in their interpersonal relationships, and through compassionately showing up, again and again, we can use the therapeutic relationship to create this.

Other pertinent information: I am open to online consultation globally or in-person locally, or can coordinate travel for on-site workshops and consultation.

Stavroula Sanida, Athens, Greece

Affiliation: Private Practice

Occupation/Position Title: Psychologist – Psychotherapist – Trainer

City: Athens

Country: Greece

Highest Degree Held: M.Sc.

FAP background, training and experience:  In 2012 I participated in an online FAP training group and this first experience was love at first sight. Living in Greece which suffered from financial crisis during those years had been a huge challenge. I had to surf daily on waves of uncertainty. The online trainings in FAP had been an awakening window to the world. Connecting with trainers and colleagues from all over the world was such a magical process. Talking in a different language, than my mother tongue, but feeling deeply understood was a touching surprise. Making friends in the FAP community has been a valuable gift. My “love at first sight” experience has become a relationship of trust and safety as years pass by. The impact of this global loving network has transformed me into a courageous surfer and I am so grateful for this metamorphosis.

Since 2012 I have attended two FAP online trainings as a trainee and a co-leader, I have attended two FAP intensive trainings (in Seattle and in Seville) and an introductory one (in London). I have received supervision by Mavis Tsai and Gareth Holman. I have led workshops about FAP as a trainer and I have presented Story Writing as an Evocative Tool in FAP in conferences.

Specialties: I work with adults and adolescents offering FAP, CBT, ACT and DBT. Story writing for my clients is a meaningful adjunct in my practice. I also provide counseling services in organizational settings. Enhancing the EAP (Employees Assistance Programme) protocol with the ACL model creates a place of warmth and openness among the employees.

Philosophy of practice: I believe that every human being is gifted with creativity. Adding creative and playful techniques in the FAP process gave me permission to be authentic and to evoke inventiveness in my clients. Writing short stories is one of these techniques which augments the application of the FAP rules. My clients become my Muses and the inspiration I gain has multiple functions: it is a vehicle for strengthening the therapeutic relationship, for preventing burnout in my practice, for reinforcing my clients’ uniqueness and putting the FAP rules into a different context.

Available: For onsite trainings, skype supervision and psychotherapy sessions.

Licensures/Certifications:  Licensed as a psychologist in Greece (#3303/03), Certified CBT Therapist, Certified FAP Trainer, Certified Trainer by the National Organization for the Certification of Qualifications & Vocational Guidance in Greece (#ΣΑ1179)

Annick Seys, Hasselt, Belgium

Affiliation: Private Practice

Occupation/Position Title: Owner Private Practice working with CBS models, Polyvagal Theory, Somatic Experience, Yogatherapy and Heartcoherence/ Therapist – trainer – supervisor working with CBS models such as FAP, ACT and RFT.

City: Hasselt

Country: Belgium (Europe)

Highest Degree Held: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work

FAP background, training and experience: For the past ten years I was owner, trainer and therapist of a training institute and 3 private practices in Belgium. I’ve educated approximately 3000 therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists, mainly in ACT but also in FAP. I supervised a lot of professionals in both ACT and FAP.

Over the last 3 years, I’ve done a lot of coaching trajectories with business owners, management teams, board members of larger companies. These were group sessions and individual sessions, usually aimed to work on interpersonal behavioural issues. FAP is an important part of my work here.

In the beginning of 2020 I sold the training institute. In the three years before that, my company put together a postgraduate program of 4 years under supervision of Prof. Dr. Yvonne Barnes – Holmes on contextual behavioural science models. It became a licensed program with an official degree in psychotherapy.

I’ve cowritten 3 books:

‘The ACT Matrix – A new approach to building psychological flexibility across settings and populations’ (2013) directed by dr. Kevin Polk (VS) en Benjamin Schoendorff (Canada).

‘Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. Theorie en praktijk’ (2015) directed by Jacqueline A-Tjak

‘Intervisie met impACT’ (2017) co – author: Jacqueline A-Tjak. In this one we’ve dedicated a chapter on FAP.

Specialties: I still see a lot of patients, individually or in group. Usually they have a trauma background. I also do a lot of coaching and training in business contexts regarding interpersonal behavior. And I regularly see psychologists and psychotherapists for supervision in ACT and FAP.

Licensures/Certifications: Certificated FAP trainer

Philosophy of practice: My aspiration is to help people find the most beautiful version of themselves. I wish for them to feel at home in their own lives. I am a therapist who engages in this process and asks my clients to do the same. Through awareness, acceptance of pain that needs to be accepted, self-as-context, kindness, love, presence and persistence I want to help people find their way. Not anyone else’s way. But their way. I’m not afraid to dive in together to get to this point. It’s worth it.

Occupation/Position Title: Licensed Clinical Social Worker

City: Denver

Country: USA

State (if in U.S.): Colorado

Highest Degree Held: MSW

FAP background, training and experience: I began learning about FAP by bringing Mavis and Bob here to Denver to do a training in 2009.  I began consultation with Mavis soon thereafter and have subsequently co-led an online workshop and a live workshop with her, here in Denver.  I’ve attended one FAP intensive in Seattle in 2013, and have co-authored an article with Benjamin Schoendorff on using FAP to train ACT.  Mavis and I also presented on using FAP to train ACT at ACBS in 2012.

Specialties: I work with complex clients, people with severe mood disorders, high conflict couples, people who have been severely traumatized.  I also run FAP groups for clients which is truly the highlight of my clinical week. I have also run a year long supervision group in FAP for Psy.D candidates from the University of Denver.  This will be my third year running this group with an exclusive FAP focus. I have been a supervisor/ consultant to therapists for 20 years.

Licensures/Certifications: I am a peer reviewed ACT trainer and a certified FAP trainer.

Philosophy of practice: It’s not personal, it’s historical. All behavior makes sense if you know the person’s learning history.  All behavior can change. There are no hopeless cases. Human beings have an astounding ability to heal and grow if they are given the right conditions. The therapy relationship can be that right condition.

Sarah Sullivan-Singh,  Seattle (WA), USA

Affiliation: The Seattle Clinic & University of Washington Department of Psychology

Occupation/Position Title: Clinical Psychologist; Partner, The Seattle Clinic; Clinical Instructor, University of Washington Psychology Department

City: Seattle

Country: USA

State (if in U.S.): Washington

Highest Degree Held: Ph.D.

FAP background, training and experience: I have been walking a path of FAP supervision, workshops, online trainings, consultation teams, and research involvement since the time of my postdoctoral fellowship in 2010.  Even before then, questions surrounding psychotherapy process fascinated me as a graduate student.  While my mind craved precise answers as to why and how psychotherapy can function to alleviate suffering, my heart longed for a therapeutic framework that was sufficiently flexible to support the mysterious and wondrous potential of healing that exists within the space of intentional human connection. I am ever grateful to the 5 Rules of FAP for providing me with a guidebook written in a language that both my mind and heart can understand!

Specialties: Health psychology

Licensures/Certifications: Licensed Psychologist, State of Washington & Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT)

Philosophy of practice:

Personal experience and empirical research align to tell us that time seems to move more quickly with each passing day.  From the beginning of my studies in psychology as an undergraduate student, I’ve focused on how the perception of time informs our goals and emotional experience.  In graduate school, I had the opportunity to explore how perceptions of time change in the face of living with cancer and to learn about these journeys firsthand from people receiving care at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.  In the face of our awareness that, regardless of age and health, our time here is limited, I am committed to asking the question: How can we make our time meaningful?

With clients, consultees, trainees, and colleagues, I aim to explore the landscape of life, including where you’re coming from, where you are now, and where you’d like to go.  I want to know who you are, the identities that shape you and how you relate to them, the cultures you call your own, and the pain and joy that visit you as a result.  I have so much to learn about how endemic biases rooted in systems of oppression impact the work we do together.  I’m committed to a lifelong path of encountering my gaps in awareness and, in response, learning to acknowledge and fill them – and through that process constructing more authentic relationships with greater healing potential.

My aim is to build a genuine connection with you that allows us to tap into your personal wisdom and integrate it with the best of what my training in FAP can offer.  Time moves quickly, so I value slowing down to witness your experience, to find play amidst the work of life, to seek sweetness even in the presence of pain, and to make meaning with the time we have together.

Tore Svartjung: Norrköping, Sweden

Affiliation: Private Practice

Occupation/Position Title: Clinical Psychologist in Primary Care, Helsa AB.

FAP background, training and experience: During my psychologist training up to 2009, I delved in to cognitive behavioral therapt, ACT and FAP and used them as theory and practice in my clinical work. In 2011 I went to my first FAP workshop with Benji Schoendorff, Katia Manduchi and Marie-France Bealdoucci. The workshop was only three hours and it rekindled a love for life and emotional intimacy that had been gone for a while. I was amazed by the possible intensity and deeply meaningful human interaction FAP showed me. I have since enjoyed therapy with trainers like Mavis Tsai, Benjamin Schoendorff, Tien Kuei and developed my competencies in FAP in trainings around the world.

I have since then helped create a FAP community online, written extensively about my private journey in incorporating FAP in my life, co-lead FAP workshops with Benjamin Schoendorff, Mavis Tsai and Bob Kohlenberg. I have also lead several Swedish FAP workshops with participating psychologists, psychologist students and mental health practitioners. I am often joined by Balazs Szücs, who co-leads workshops with me.

Specialties: In private practice I specialize in emotional intimacy training for individuals and couples. I have worked with FAP in specialist psychiatric care, primary care and in private practice since 2011. I often add it to existing cognitive-behavioral or ACT therapies.

Available: For local onsite trainings, Skype supervision and psychotherapy sessions.

Licensures/Certifications:  Licensed as a clinical psychologist in Sweden. Certified FAP Trainer.

I work with adults and older teens to treat a variety of problems including addictions, anxiety/trauma, depression, psychosis, and other difficulties. I also work with family members who have loved ones with addictions or persistent mental illness in a non-blaming and supportive manner to help them improve their relationships with their loved ones, get their loved ones into treatment (if needed), and to better take care of themselves. I use evidence-based treatments and draw heavily from cognitive-behavioral treatments, particularly newer cognitive-behavioral therapies such as Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. While I am committed to using evidence-based therapies, I believe in tailoring treatment to best meet the needs and strengths of the individual.

My approach emphasizes the development of a collaborative and compassionate therapeutic relationship to facilitate client growth in multiple life domains.

My practice of therapy is guided by my compassion for my clients, my belief in their resiliency, and my commitment to help them use their strengths to create meaningful and value-guided lives. Depending on the goals and needs of the client, I can provide structured, brief, or long-term therapies.

Affiliation: Private Practice and University of São Paulo

Occupation/Position Title: Clinical Psychotherapist, Supervisor, Trainer

City: São Paulo (SP)

Country: Brazil

Highest Degree Held: D.Sc.

FAP background, training and experience: I started learning FAP in 2002 at the University of São Paulo from Sonia Meyer, Ph.D., and have been practicing it since then. From 2011 to 2015 I developed my dissertation, under the guidance of Sonia Meyer and Jonathan Kanter, investigating aspects of conducting FAP and its effects. Since 2011, I have been trained extensively in FAP by Jonathan Kanter and have participated in, assisted in, and co-led numerous FAP workshops in the U.S. and online and have led several workshops in Brazil.

Specialties: Adult individual psychotherapy using FAP, FAP supervision and FAP workshops. I am dedicated to elaborating, developing and improving the teaching of FAP using coherent behavioral principles via theoretical courses, practical workshops and supervision.

Licensures/Certifications: Licensed Clinical Psychologist by University of São Paulo (Brazil) and Certified FAP Trainer

Philosophy of practice: I conduct my work based on behavioral analysis and a FAP understanding of social connection, with the consideration that issues are always based on personal history and present context. View in that context, every behavior has a reason to exist even when it brings suffering to the behaving person or others around him/her. To think in historical ways helps me make contact with the common humanity that everyone has. I believe my job as a therapist is to give clients the opportunity to build a new history and new ways to behave and interact with others. Working on the development of awareness, courage and love repertoires allows me to be connected with people and their suffering, and to help them to be more connected with others.
